White Bird begins with Julian, a student at a prominent prep school in Manhattan, who receives a belated education in social dynamics when a bully reminds him in the lunchroom that he is at the “loser’s table.” His premature marginalisation as a result of this encounter drives him to become fixated on the goal of "fitting in" and reaching "normalcy," which he defines as being neither "mean nor nice." His Grandmère Sara, visiting New York for an art exhibition, narrates a story that takes up much of the film's runtime, centring on an event from 1942 in an Alsatian region that, while not formally occupied by the Nazis, is close enough to feel their overhanging presence.
